Allergens

It is now law to declare the presence of the following 14 allergens on the label of any food or drink product: Tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, mustard, celery, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, soya beans, gluten, eggs, milk, lupin and sulphur dioxide at levels above 10mg per kg or per litre.

Some food labels say 'may contain nuts' or 'may contain seeds'. This means that while nuts or seeds aren't deliberately included in the food, the manufacturer can't be sure that the product doesn't accidentally contain small amounts of them. It usually means that the food has been manufactured in a factory where products containing nuts and seeds have been made.
