Fluids

Drinking plenty of fluids is vital for good health. Our Healthwise programme encourages Sodexo employees and our customers to drink six to eight glasses a day.

Hydrate for good health

About two thirds of our body weight is made up of water. Water is essential for helping blood carry nutrients around the body and many of the chemical reactions in our cells rely on it.

When we lose fluid through perspiration, breathing and urine, it is important to replace it. The recommended daily fluid intake is six to eight glasses, or 1.2 litres. In hot weather and during exercise you will need even more to replace lost fluids and avoid dehydration.

Apart from feeling thirsty, there are a few other signs you may be dehydrated, such as:

  • Dark coloured urine

  • Headaches

  • Lack of concentration

To keep yourself hydrated, drink plenty of fluid - whether it's water, pure fruit juice, milk, tea or coffee. Tea, coffee and cola do, however, contain caffeine which is a diuretic, making the body produce more urine. While it is fine to drink caffeinated drinks, make sure you also drink other fluids that are caffeine free.

Try not to drink too many sugary drinks such as squash, fizzy drinks and energy drinks. And don't drink too many alcoholic drinks, which can actually lead to dehydration.
