Stressed but dining at desk?
Long periods of stress can be extremely harmful, and needs to be recognised and avoided as a regular issue in a person's lifestyle.
But if you reach for cake when you're stressed, or step up your coffee or alcohol intake, you are likely to feel worse, rather than better.
That's not entirely down to feeling guilty for doing this, but also because these actions don't actually help your body deal with stress - instead they can enhance feelings of anxiety, irritability and tiredness.
Sugary, unhealthy foods like cakes, ice cream or biscuits will give you a brief lift, or burst of energy, followed by a sharp drop.
If you can eat healthy food regularly during times of stress, you will be getting a steady source of energy which will help you deal with your mood, and it is also important to get some exercise.
Up to 60% of office-based staff admit to skipping a break for lunch or eating a sandwich at their desk - leading to the coining of the phrase 'dining al desko'.
However a proper break is essential and making time for a meal break is good for well-being and for company productivity levels. Making sure staff go away from their workplace at lunchtimes means people will come back refreshed and more able to work.
